Sampling

Our modern and highly sensitive analysis procedures require any samples to be collected and handled carefully to avoid systematic errors. Proper sampling procedures are a prerequisite of technically valid results. Please avoid any contamination from dust, handling, or tools during the sampling process. This will allow us to provide you with accurate results.

Size and packaging

Please package any valuable samples appropriately. Glass bottles with a tight-fitting screw cap are usually the best solution. The outer packaging is also important. Glass bottles can be cushioned with foam rubber or PE bubble wrap (air cushioning). The sample bottle and its cushioning should then be securely packaged in a sturdy cardboard box. PE bags (double-bagged and sealed) are a viable alternative for powdery sample materials that are stable under ambient air conditions. These bags can be shipped inside a padded envelope. Many plastic bags emit plasticizers that can be absorbed by fine powders with high surface areas. This systematically corrupts the carbon content of any samples packaged in this way. For extreme trace analysis with mass spectrometry, it is essential to use firmly sealed and carefully decontaminated plastic bottles made from FEP or PE. Glass bottles have proven to be especially insufficient for sodium trace analysis. A second outer packaging layer of glass or plastic is advisable. This will ensure that your samples are properly collected ready for us to perform analysis.
